Abstract<br> 
Virgo is a 3km interferometric detector of gravitational waves in 
construction near Pisa (Italy) by a INFN(Italy)-CNRS(France) joint 
collaboration.
The scientific targets,the status of the construction and first results 
from operation of the central part of the interferometer will be presented.
