I will give an overview of our current picture of the physical mechanisms that are at play in high-energy collisions, spanning both perturbative and non-perturbative phenomena. I will review the current state of the art of detailed numerical models of these processes, embodied by Monte Carlo event generators, and explain why I believe we are on the cusp of at least two exciting revolutions. I will round off with a personal selection of a few measurement highlights from the Large Hadron Collider, including both successes and failures.
